Mares Pneumatic Sten Gun - 42cm (with Holster)
The Mares Mini Sten Pneumatic Speargun has been around for quite some time now and is extremely popular for divers who are looking for a compact gun that can be easily stored away. It is a popular pick when choosing an air powered speargun due to it short length of 42cm that is perfect for shallow reef diving and catching crays and small reef fish. This pneumatic speargun is universally appreciated by all spearfishermen for its accuracy, power, and reliability. The way that this particular pneumatic gun works is by using compressed air which propels the spear out of the barrel. There is a chamber inside the gun that you pump up using the hand pump provided to fill the chamber with air and this take approx 100 pumps which will give more than enough power to penetrate through small to mid size reef fish and crays. There is a piston inside the barrel that moves when the spear is loaded and is what pushes the spear out when shot. Having the piston prevent air from escaping when the gun is shot which means that no air is released, giving you multiple shots without having to pump up the gun every time. Depending on how often you use the gun, will depend on how long it will take for more air to be added.
The Mares Sten guns come with a 8mm shaft that has a screw on tip that can be changed if the tip gets blunt after time, it also comes with some line, the simple loader and hand held pump. It meets the needs of fishermen looking for great power and reliability, yet at a compact size. Generally this gun is used by boat owners who are looking to jump over board to catch their dinner, then store it away for the next meal. The 42cm gun is a great gun for crays and small fish. The length of gun does not determine the amount of power, the length determines how far of range you will have and the general rule is that the range from handle to tip of spear is 4 times the length of the gun so being 42cm, you will get approx 1.68m of shooting range. The operating line pressure is 13 BAR and the connecting piston is 1.5mm. The ergonomic handle is extremely comfortable to hold and this particular gun comes with an added feature of a holster that straps to your leg when diving so you can keep your gun out of the way with both hands free until you need to us it.
To load the pneumatic gun, you use a "loader". This comes with the gun when you purchase it and is a small black plastic hand piece. This is held on the tip of the spear and is what you use to push the spear in to the gun against the air pressure. Generally you will use your thigh as the supporter to help push the spear in or the top of your foot depending on the length of the gun. This is just as difficult as loading a standard rubber railgun as you are pushing against lots of pressure. The loader is something that you do not want to loose as if you lose it, you will no longer be able to load your speargun. Here at Dive Warehouse we recommend on always having a spare, so tie some thin rope to your loader and have it connected to your self or your gun to prevent from dropping or loosing it.
