Three destroyers were made for the Royal Australian Navy's built in Michigan in 1962 to the U.S. Charles F Adams design. One of these was the HMAS Perth, guided Missile Destroyer. After 3 years of service she was decommissioned and had steamed in excess of one million nautical miles.
The HMAS Perth is 133 metres long and 14.3 metres. On the 24th November 2001 the HMAS Perth was sunk in King George Sound, just off Seal Rock in 38 metres of water with her large calibre guns still in tact and her mast protruding above the surface.
The large gun on the decks is a standout feature on this wreck. The Crows nest has been designed to act as an excellent safety stop area being at almost exactly 5 meters. Being larger than the HMAS Swan wreck in dunsborough it also has much more to look at than the Swan which unfortuanetly was stripped of all internal items . They have made ammends withthe Perth and has significant darker areas where a torch is a must.
The depth of 38 meters that one will be definately affected by narcosis and divers should ensure they do not exceed their certified depths.
The growth and colour oncoulre Schools of fish can be found in every small compartment and opening. Large Samson Fish are often seen with the occasional jew fish.
The wreck has been painstakingly prepared for diving and numerous holes cut into the side of the vessel which allows for easy access into the wreck for those with the appropriate training and experience. Although the holes are designed specifically to avoid slit build up it still accumulates in the lower decks and penetration should not be taken lightly . The bottom of the wreck is at 38 meters.
This trip is available to open water divers as Advanced training and supervision included. Experienced divers are welcome. Wreck penetration courses are also conducted during this trip.
