The Shaft Sinkhole
Mount GAmbier South Australia

shaft 5a Diver at the small entrance lake of the Shaft.
shaft 1 Entrance to The Shaft. 800 mm diameter hole. The base of the sinkhole however is close to the size of two football ovals
shaft 2 An
shaft 4 Preparing for descent into the shaft.
shaft 5 Small lake area of the Shaft about the size of a backyard swimming pool. Divers must first absail down and then lower their equipment into the water. Kit up in the water before descending.Very difficult entry but one of the largest Sinkholes in the area and well worth the effort. Normally requires a minimum of four divers to carry out this operation.
shaft 6 Guide with his four hundred watt (400 watt) torch!!
shaft 8 Filming difficult in the black void of the shaft.
shaft 12 Looking up from the bootom of the sinkhole into the entrance lake above. In summer months the Sunlight forms a awsome shaft of light the glow from which lights up this huge Sinkhole.
shaft7 Hovering above one of the two 90 meter and 120 meter tunnels that extend out
from the main sinkhole section. Maximum depth permitted by divers is 40 meters however it is possible to look down over 50 meters into these tunnel sections with the aid of the guide's 400 watt torch.
shaft8 The Shaft is vast in size and would take several dives to see only 50% of it.
